Hundreds of Muslim inmates at the Class IIA Kerobokan Penitentiary in Bali have received sentence reductions or remission for Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah. Out of 603 inmates proposed for remission this year, 570 were deemed eligible.

“570 individuals have received Remission Decrees. Meanwhile, 14 have been transferred to other Technical Implementation Units, four are undergoing integration programmes, and 15 others are still in the verification process,” stated the Head of the Inmate and Offender Guidance Section at Kerobokan Prison, Moretska Viktor Noya, on Sunday (22/3/2026).

For Special Remission Category I, the majority of inmates received sentence reductions ranging from 15 days to two months. The breakdown includes 145 people receiving 15 days, 363 people (one month), 22 people (one month and 15 days), and 24 people (two months).

Meanwhile, for Special Remission Category II, which allows inmates to be released immediately upon receiving remission, 16 people were recorded. This consists of 12 people receiving 15 days’ remission and four people receiving one month’s remission.

“This remission is granted to inmates who have behaved well and met the applicable requirements. It also serves as a form of motivation for them to continue improving themselves during their sentence,” he added.

In terms of nationality, the majority of recipients are Indonesian citizens (WNI) numbering 582 people. There are also five foreign nationals (WNA) who received remission, originating from Syria, Russia, Turkey, Palestine, and Malaysia.

“The hope is that they can return as better individuals and contribute positively to society,” Noya stated.

Based on data as of 21 March 2026, Noya said the number of occupants at Kerobokan Prison reached 1,730 people. They consist of 679 detainees and 1,051 inmates, including 57 foreign nationals. This figure is said to exceed the prison’s ideal capacity of only 1,480 people.
