5-Metre Flooding in Periuk Housing Complex, Tangerang Following Sabi Canal Embankment Collapse
Severe flooding up to 5.5 metres in height occurred in Periuk District, Tangerang City. The Banten Provincial Government reported that a collapsed embankment in the Sabi Canal (Kali Sabi) drainage system caused the high water overflow.
“I just spoke with (the Tangerang City Public Works Department) – it’s true, the water level is high. There’s an embankment in the Sabi Canal drainage channel that has collapsed,” said Arlan Marzan, Head of the Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR) Department of Banten Province, on Monday (9 March 2026).
According to Arlan, authorities are currently handling the issue. Sand bags are being used to seal the collapsed embankment.
“The Tangerang City Government is currently working on a temporary solution using sand bags,” Arlan said.
Additionally, Arlan highlighted narrowing sections in the Sabi Canal, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Ciliwung Cisadane Large River Basin Authority (BBWSCC). To reduce flooding, the BBWSCC has deployed water pumps.
“BBWSCC has sent pumps. There are indeed many narrow sections and sediment accumulation throughout the Sabi Canal,” he said.
