Throughout February 2026, 5,284 kilograms of crabs from Timika, West Papua were successfully exported to Malaysia and Singapore. The exports were conducted across nine shipments, generating total foreign exchange earnings of approximately Rp 332,224,743.60.

These crab exports serve as evidence that marine commodities from Papua’s waters possess significant potential to compete in international markets.

Beyond generating foreign exchange revenue for the nation, the export activity has created economic opportunities for various stakeholders in the region, including fishermen, traders, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) involved in the seafood supply chain.

Timika Customs has played an active role in supporting the smooth operation of export activities. Through the Customs Visit Customer (CVC) programme, Customs provides direct assistance to business operators to ensure export processes comply with regulations and facilitate business operators’ access to foreign markets.

“We are endeavouring to provide optimal guidance and service to business operators so that export processes can run smoothly,” said Galuh Untoro Yogi, Head of Internal Compliance and Extension Section at Timika Customs, in a statement on Wednesday (11 March 2026).

He expressed hope that increasingly more regional flagship products will penetrate international markets, as increased exports can deliver broader economic benefits for local communities.

With increasingly open access to global markets, the value addition of local marine products is expected to increase whilst spurring economic growth in the Mimika region and surrounding areas.
