Timika (ANTARA) - A total of 38 micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) operators participated in the 2026 Lunar New Year Market Festival organised by the Indonesian Chinese Social Association (PSMTI) of Mimika Regency, Central Papua.

Yoesoef Kurniawan, chairman of the Mimika Lunar New Year Market Festival committee, said in Timika on Tuesday that the festival was part of a series of Lunar New Year activities in Mimika Regency.

"There are hundreds of MSMEs in Mimika, but due to space limitations we could only accommodate 38. We prepared all the stalls for them to sell their goods free of charge," said Kurniawan.

He explained that the festival was not only intended to introduce Chinese-Indonesian culture in Mimika but also to drive community economic growth through MSMEs.

"Some stalls are earning profits of Rp3 million per day. We hope that through this event there will be profits and a large circulation of money at this festival," he said.

The Lunar New Year Market Festival ran for three days, from 15 to 17 February 2026.

"The peak of the Lunar New Year celebrations will be at the Cap Go Meh event on 3 March 2026. We will hold it at the Eme Neme Yauware Building," said Kurniawan.

Fransiska Piry, a member of the Mimika Regional National Crafts Council (Dekranasda), said the festival helped enliven the MSME economy in Mimika.

"Dekranasda has six stalls selling distinctive Kamoro tribal carvings, woven goods, food and beverages," she said.

She noted that the goods sold at the stalls were sourced from local Papuan carvers and craftspeople under Dekranasda's guidance.

"Our daily profits are above Rp2 million. We can channel blessings to the native craftspeople of Mimika because we take their products and help them to be more productive in creating their works for the market," said Fransiska.

Evi Rianty Dias, an MSME operator participating in the event, said the festival had a positive economic impact on Mimika's MSMEs.

"This is a great moment for us. Going forward, if there are more festivals, even more MSMEs should be involved."
