Banda Aceh (ANTARA) — A total of 30 tonnes of beef prepared by the Banda Aceh municipal government for the Acehnese meugang tradition was bought up by local residents within three days of the affordable market programme, with enthusiastic purchasing driven by the subsidised prices.

"Since the first day we launched the meugang affordable beef market, approximately 30 tonnes of meat — including bones, hide and offal — has been purchased by the public at subsidised prices," said Iskandar, Head of the Banda Aceh Food, Agriculture, Marine and Fisheries Agency (DP2KP), in Banda Aceh on Tuesday.

The Banda Aceh municipal government, through the DP2KP and in collaboration with the Tirta Daroy municipal enterprise and Bank Indonesia's Aceh representative office, organised the affordable meugang beef market to welcome the holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah, running from 15 to 18 February 2026 across 12 designated sales points throughout the city.

The meugang beef was sold at Rp140,000 per kilogram at the affordable market, having been subsidised by the municipal government. This made it considerably cheaper than the prevailing market price during the meugang tradition, which reaches Rp180,000 per kilogram.

Iskandar explained that the 30 tonnes of meugang beef sold came from a total of 41 cattle averaging 700-800 kg each, slaughtered from the first day of operations through to Tuesday afternoon across 11 distribution points.

"So, given the average weight of the cattle, 30 tonnes of meat including hide, bones and offal has been purchased by the public," he said.

He detailed the slaughter schedule for the affordable market meugang beef: on Sunday (15 February), eight head of cattle were processed, distributed across the Lhong Raya area (four head), Lampoh Daya (two head), and Neusu Market (two head).

On Monday (16 February), 13 head were slaughtered, spread across Lam Ara (two head), Pasar Aceh (three head), and Batoh and Lampaseh (four head each).

On Tuesday, 19 cattle were processed across four sales points: Lampaseh Aceh and Punge Ujong (five head each), Lamglumpang (six head) and Jeulingke (four head).

Additionally, the affordable meugang beef market was to continue through to Wednesday (18 February) at a final sales point in front of the PDAM Tirta Daroy office in Banda Aceh, where six cattle were planned for slaughter on the last day.

"This means the total beef supply at the meugang affordable market could exceed 35 tonnes, with the addition of six more cattle tomorrow, or approximately 4.5 tonnes," he said.

Iskandar explained that the affordable meugang beef market was one of the Banda Aceh government's efforts to control inflation ahead of Ramadan, particularly regarding beef purchases.

"Beyond controlling inflation, through this affordable market the Banda Aceh municipal government also wishes to provide quality beef at low prices to the public," he affirmed.

He added that given the estimated meugang beef demand in Banda Aceh of around 50-60 tonnes, this affordable market programme had done a considerable job of suppressing inflation in the Aceh provincial capital.

"Meugang beef demand is estimated at 50-60 tonnes for Banda Aceh, so with 30 tonnes already sold at the affordable market, the government has helped meet 50 per cent of demand — and there is still one more day to go," Iskandar said.
