Jakarta — Young people’s interest in performing the hajj pilgrimage is demonstrating a positive trend. Harry Alexander, a member of the Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH), revealed that approximately 25 per cent of current hajj registrants are from Generation Z and millennial cohorts.

According to Harry, the increased interest among younger generations is largely attributable to various approaches undertaken by BPKH in collaboration with Islamic leaders and organisations, including the promotion of the green hajj concept or environmentally responsible pilgrimage.

“We have worked with Buya Anwar Abbas to develop the green hajj concept, or responsible green hajj, and have even published a book on the subject. This concept is important so that pilgrims understand that performing the hajj can also be aligned with the values of environmental stewardship as taught by the Prophet,” Harry stated on Friday (13 March 2026).

He explained that cooperation with various parties such as the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI), Nahdlatul Ulama, and Muhammadiyah has also contributed to raising awareness among Muslims to register for hajj early.

As a result, the BPKH’s hajj registrant target for 2025 was not only achieved but also exceeded the annual work and budget plan (RKAT). The original target was set at 422,000 registrants, but the actual result reached approximately 488,000 registrants.
