25 Million West Java Residents Predicted to Travel Home for 2026 Lebaran Holiday
BANDUNG — The Transportation Authority (Dishub) of West Java Province has revealed that 25 million West Java residents are predicted to undertake travel during the 2026 Lebaran holiday exodus. The authority anticipates a significant increase in the number of travellers returning to their hometowns.
“Fifty per cent of West Java’s population will undertake mudik (homecoming) travel or return to their villages. So roughly 25.1 million people will make the journey, whilst 25.6 million will not,” stated Dhani Gumelar, Head of the West Java Provincial Transportation Authority, on Monday (9 March 2026).
He noted that the largest concentration of mudik traffic is expected to originate from Bogor district, with approximately 4.2 million travellers departing from that area. “Bekasi and surrounding areas, including Bandung city, are also significant, but based on our survey findings, the majority of travellers will be from Bogor and its surroundings,” he explained.
Gumelar continued that the primary destinations for the exodus are predicted to be Garut and surrounding areas, including Bandung district, Greater Bandung, and Tasikmalaya district. The West Java Transportation Authority has prepared thousands of personnel across districts and cities, as well as provincial and ministry-level officers to ensure public safety. They will maintain security presence at locations prone to congestion, accidents, and potential disaster risks from extreme weather conditions.
“Approximately 4,200 combined personnel will be deployed,” he stated.
He expressed hope that this year’s mudik season would proceed smoothly. His office will begin field operations from 14 March until 29 March.
