21,000 Houses in Papua to Be Renovated
The Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) targets the renovation of 21,000 uninhabitable houses (RTLH) in the Papua region through the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS), which will begin implementation in May 2026.
The programme was launched in Sorong City on Monday (27/4/2026) by PKP Minister Maruarar Sirait, together with Interior Minister Tito Karnavian and Southwest Papua Governor Elisa Kambu, as part of efforts to accelerate the improvement of housing quality for communities in eastern Indonesia.
PKP Minister Maruarar Sirait, or Ara, stated that the BSPS programme represents a tangible manifestation of the state’s presence in fulfilling the basic needs of the community, particularly in providing decent, healthy, and safe housing.
She explained that the allocation for the BSPS programme in Papua has been significantly increased to a minimum of 21,000 units, spread across six provinces and 42 regencies/cities. Each regency/city will receive at least 500 units of assistance.
According to her, the programme not only focuses on the physical construction of houses but also involves the community through a self-help scheme.
This approach is expected to encourage citizen participation while stimulating the local economy.
Meanwhile, Tito appreciated the PKP Ministry’s step in delivering a massive housing programme in Papua.
He emphasised the importance of support from local governments to ensure the programme runs smoothly, from data collection to on-the-ground policies.
In the meantime, Elisa stated her readiness to synergise with the central government to ensure the BSPS programme runs optimally and on target.
The implementation of the BSPS programme is expected to become a momentum for accelerating the handling of RTLH in Papua, while also improving the quality of life for the community through the provision of more decent housing.
