1st nuke plant to operate in 2000

SEMARANG, Central Java: One of several nuclear power plants to be built on Mount Muria is expected to go into operation early in the year 2000, an official said on Saturday.

Director General of the National Atomic Energy Djali Ahimsa said in a meeting with members of the provincial legislative council that the station was needed to help solve the problems of power shortages in Java and Bali.

He said a recent feasibility study showed that the Ujungwatu village, in Jepara, was the most suitable site for a nuclear plant.

He argued that nuclear was the most reliable power source to meet the demand for 27,000 megawatts of electricity on the two islands. To satisfy the need, Indonesia would need seven to 12 nuclear reactors. (har/pan)
