1st nuke plant to operate in 2000<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java: One of several nuclear power plants to
\nbe built on Mount Muria is expected to go into operation early in
\nthe year 2000, an official said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Director General of the National Atomic Energy Djali Ahimsa
\nsaid in a meeting with members of the provincial legislative
\ncouncil that the station was needed to help solve the problems of
\npower shortages in Java and Bali.<\/p>\n
He said a recent feasibility study showed that the Ujungwatu
\nvillage, in Jepara, was the most suitable site for a nuclear
\nplant.<\/p>\n
He argued that nuclear was the most reliable power source to
\nmeet the demand for 27,000 megawatts of electricity on the two
\nislands. To satisfy the need, Indonesia would need seven to 12
