1m hectare land for agribusiness

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The Irian Jaya provincial administration has allotted one million hectares of farmland for agribusiness development.

The head of the Irian Jaya agriculture office, Robinson Sihite, told Antara Wednesday that the land earmarked for agribusiness development was spread throughout eight of Irian Jaya's ten districts.

Sihite said land in Irian Jaya was suitable for the development of palm oil, cacao, Arabica coffee and hybrid coconut plantations. "The land is also good for cattle breeding, and flower cultivation," he said.

He said information and promotion of Irian Jaya was very poor, limiting the number of investors in the agriculture and plantation sectors in the easternmost province.

So far only investors from Java have invested in the agribusiness sector, Sihite said.
