1997 may still witness violence
1997 may still witness violence
From Jayakarta
A legislator from the United Development Party faction, A.A. Oka Mahendra, is of the opinion that mass violence will color 1997 if the conditions which led to last year's violence are not ironed out (Jayakarta, Jan. 4, 1997).
The above prediction was obviously based on facts and attitudes prevalent in society. The people know what is really happening although in many cases the issues are intentionally covered up.
I am also convinced that violence will only lead to the disintegration of the nation. It is not surprising that many of our leaders are deeply concerned about the present situation in and condition of our country.
The community has become violent not only because of the widening social gap, prevalence of business collusion and human rights violations, but also because society is sick of empty speeches by officials which do not conform with reality.
The people also know that welfare is only enjoyed by a privileged few, which further adds to their resentment.
That is why robberies and murders, etc. have been rampant these last few months and continue to haunt us.
Gen. (retired) Soemitro reminded us that the violence and riots of 1996 should be taken as "a serious warning" to the government so that it should stop being so arrogant (Media Indonesia, Jan. 4, 1997). That's also why the leaders should not be selfish and take advantage of their position without realizing the consequences. Patience has its limit. Let's hope the nation does not lose its integrity.
