1997 may still witness violence<\/p>\n

A legislator from the United Development Party faction, A.A.
\nOka Mahendra, is of the opinion that mass violence will color
\n1997 if the conditions which led to last year's violence are not
\nironed out (Jayakarta, Jan. 4, 1997).<\/p>\n
The above prediction was obviously based on facts and
\nattitudes prevalent in society. The people know what is really
\nhappening although in many cases the issues are intentionally
\ncovered up.<\/p>\n
I am also convinced that violence will only lead to the
\ndisintegration of the nation. It is not surprising that many of
\nour leaders are deeply concerned about the present situation in
\nand condition of our country.<\/p>\n
The community has become violent not only because of the
\nwidening social gap, prevalence of business collusion and human
\nrights violations, but also because society is sick of empty
\nspeeches by officials which do not conform with reality.<\/p>\n
The people also know that welfare is only enjoyed by a
\nprivileged few, which further adds to their resentment.<\/p>\n
That is why robberies and murders, etc. have been rampant
\nthese last few months and continue to haunt us.<\/p>\n
Gen. (retired) Soemitro reminded us that the violence and
\nriots of 1996 should be taken as "a serious warning" to the
\ngovernment so that it should stop being so arrogant (Media
\nIndonesia, Jan. 4, 1997). That's also why the leaders should not
\nbe selfish and take advantage of their position without realizing
\nthe consequences. Patience has its limit. Let's hope the nation
\ndoes not lose its integrity.<\/p>\n
