Mothers living in big cities play an important role in raising the quality of their families especially in a multi-ethnic metropolis like Jakarta.
"Incidents that happen in cities, such as student brawls, are proof that many families have not been well controlled," said Ichtijanto, chairman of the national committee of the Mother of the Year contest, at the City Hall.
He said that mothers should not abandon their families to pursue careers because they are responsible for raising the quality of their children and families.
The triennial competition judges a woman's daily role as a mother, a wife and a member of the society.
Siti Sabtiyah was named the winner of the competition, with Umi Kalsum as the runner-up and Atikah S. Krisnandi in third. (yns)
