16 FHUI Students Allegedly Involved in Harassment, Lawyer Admits Reporting to Police is Not an Easy Matter
As many as 27 students and lecturers at the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia (FHUI) have become victims of verbal sexual harassment carried out by students in a group chat. The perpetrators are suspected to number 16 students.
The victims’ legal representative, Timotius Rajagukguk, said that his side would still consider the possibility of reporting the case to the police. However, he admitted that he would first communicate with the victims.
“Regarding the possibility of opening a police report, first, I will leave it entirely to the victims,” he said at Pusgiwa UI on Tuesday (14/4/2026).
According to him, reporting a sexual harassment case to the police is not an easy step. It requires extra effort from the victims to report the case to the authorities.
Timotius stated that the current mechanism for handling sexual violence cases in the police is not yet victim-friendly. This is because, in the process, victims face significant exposure, including undergoing repeated examinations by investigators. Moreover, there are still police investigators who lack a victim perspective.
“That is something I will consider first with the victims. But if there are parties from the police who see this and indeed want to help, I am very open to it. As long as the police side can guarantee that the handling of this case will be very supportive and victim-friendly,” he said.
