125 netted in ID inspection
At least 125 people found to be traveling without identification cards (KTP) were apprehended by the Central Jakarta population office team on Monday.
The citizenship inspection took place in the afternoon along Jl. Percetakan Negara, Central Jakarta, checking motorists and people riding public transportation for proper identification.
Those who were found without proper identification were subjected to an on-the-spot trial held at the office of the state-owned salt factory, PN Garam, which was headed by judge Leo Hutagalung of the Central Jakarta district court.
Offenders were either fined between Rp 11,000 (US$5) and Rp 25,000, or incarcerated for five days.
As quoted by Pelita the head of the Central Jakarta population office, H Nurzul Noor, explained that the operation is designed to increase awareness towards the necessity to carry valid identification documents at all times. (mds)
