12 Jakarta youths dead in Bogor

JAKARTA (JP): At least 12 students of two maritime high schools (SPM) in Jakarta were found dead in Cisadane River in Bogor on Sunday.

Local police said the students were among 200 students of SPM Baruna and SPM Aditama in Jakarta, who arrived in Bogor -- 40 kilometers to the south of here -- a day earlier and were involved in a fierce street brawl with local students of Penerbangan technical high school (STM Penerbangan) on Jl. Semeru.

No fatalities were recorded during Saturday's fight.

The visiting students, who police said had plotted the attack for revenge, sprinted to different directions when local residents rushed to the scene to disperse the teenagers.

It was believed that at this time some of the boys, who were unfamiliar with the area, jumped into the river after seeking refuge on a nearby golf course.

Local police and residents had no idea about the fate of the boys until a villager found a body floating on the river on Sunday.

Two of the victims have yet to be identified.

Antara identified 10 of the dead boys -- all still in their school uniforms and aged between 16 and 19 -- as Marzuki, Abdurahman Fauzi, Iwan Firmansyah, Agus Pranoto, Rizal, Triyono, M. Makasau, Chaerul Anwar, Agus Rusmana and Abdul Halim.

Their bodies are being kept at Bogor's Red Cross Hospital, waiting to be claimed by relatives. (bsr)
