12-Car KRL Train Tested on Green Line Route, When Will It Operate?
JAKARTA - PT KAI Commuter (KCI) has conducted trial operations of a 12-car train set for the electric train service (KRL) on the Rangkasbitung-Tanah Abang route.
The trial was recorded in a post by the Instagram account @aboutdkj that went viral on Sunday, 1 March 2026. In the video, the 12-car KRL train set was shown stopped at a station, with several personnel inspecting the train configuration from the outside and inside.
VP Corporate Secretary of KAI Commuter, Karina Amanda, confirmed the trial of the 12-car train set for the Green Line route. “We conducted it on 28 February,” said Karina when confirmed by Kompas.com on Monday, 2 March 2026. “We are currently in the trial phase to ensure that supporting infrastructure can accommodate the operation of Commuterline with a 12-car configuration on the Green Line route,” she explained.
Karina continued that the trial would proceed with testing the load capacity of the 12-car train set. When asked when the 12-car KRL for the Tanah Abang-Rangkasbitung route would be put into operation for passengers, Karina could not provide a definitive timeline. “If the evaluation indicates it is not yet feasible, KAI together with the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation will continue to strengthen the infrastructure,” Karina explained. “This includes the development of rail electrification to strengthen capacity and reliability of the service,” she added.
Karina explained that the current number of cars in a single KRL Green Line train set in operation is 10 cars. She confirmed that the 12-car trial is intended to accommodate the high growth in passenger numbers on the Green Line route.
