108 students receive scholarships

JAKARTA: Over 100 elementary students in Bekasi have received scholarships from Lippo Cikarang as part of the company's community service in the area.

The students from eight state elementary schools in five villages surrounding Lippo Cikarang were awarded the scholarships for the 2001/2002 school year, head of the company's public relations department, Jeanny L. Wullur, said on Wednesday.

Each of the 108 students received a total of Rp 120,000 to pay for annual school fees, uniforms, books and stationery, she added.

The scholarships were officially handed over to representatives of the students by Bekasi regent Wikanda Darmawijaya on Monday.

According to government regulations, state schools are free but, in reality, students have to make payments to cover various needs, such as building maintenance and extra-curricular activities. -- JP
