Disaster Management Center (DMC) Dompet Dhuafa has successfully held a Technical Guidance (Bimtek) session on Disaster-Safe Educational Units (SPAB) as part of the commemoration of Disaster Preparedness Day (HKB) 2026. The event took place at the auditorium of Bireuen District Special School, Aceh, on Monday (13 April 2026).

A total of 100 primary school (SD) and junior secondary school (SMP) teachers from 20 schools in Bireuen District participated in the activity.

The SPAB Bimtek, running from 13 to 18 April 2026, was officially opened by the Deputy Regent of Bireuen, Razuardi. In his address, he stressed the importance of enhancing preparedness in the educational environment to reduce disaster risks.

“Teachers must not only be able to protect themselves but also ensure the safety of students and act as agents of change in disseminating disaster education to the community,” said Razuardi in a press release received by Kompas.com on Thursday (30 April 2026).

He also affirmed the commitment of the Bireuen District Government (Pemkab) in supporting disaster risk reduction programmes in the education sector.

“Synergy between local government, humanitarian institutions, and the community is a strategic step in realising disaster-safe educational units,” added Razuardi.

In its implementation, the SPAB Bimtek programme began with cross-sector coordination involving the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the Education Office. The next stage involved field verification in several sub-districts to ensure the readiness of targeted schools.

Participants then attended face-to-face training for two to three days. The materials covered included disaster risk analysis in school environments, preparation of risk maps and evacuation routes, development of standard operating procedures (SOP) for emergencies, and evacuation simulations for school communities.

“Participants come from 20 schools in Bireuen District. After completing the training, the teachers will also receive certificates,” he said.

Lukman hopes that the knowledge gained can be applied sustainably in their respective school environments.

Thus, teachers’ capacity in disaster mitigation can directly impact the enhancement of safety in learning environments.

“It is hoped that schools will not only be places of learning but also safe and resilient spaces in facing potential disasters,” said Lukman.

Through this activity, DMC Dompet Dhuafa hopes that a disaster-aware culture can grow and take root in the educational environment.

With the active involvement of teachers, efforts to realise disaster-safe schools in Bireuen District are expected to proceed sustainably and provide tangible benefits for student safety.
