10 vehicles involved in pileups

JAKARTA: A total of 10 vehicles were involved in two pileups along the Tangerang toll road during Monday morning rush hours. However, a member of staff of toll road operator PT Jasa Marga, Arifudin, confirmed there were no casualties.

The first accident took place at 7:30 a.m. on the Jakarta- Tangerang toll road in West Jakarta, five kilometers from the Tomang intersection. Six vehicles -- a Daihatsu Espass, a Sedan, two Toyota Kijangs, a minivan, a truck -- were heading to Tangerang when they collided.

The second accident, which took place at 9:25 a.m., was caused when a truck's brakes failed on the same section of the tollroad, but heading to Jakarta. The truck caused a pileup involving three other vehicles; a Hyundai sedan, a Toyota Starlet and a Toyota Kijang.

The accident caused extensive congestion on both sides of the road, especially traffic traveling from the Tangerang direction, in which the queue of vehicles stretched for more than three kilometers. -- JP
