10 Million People Travel Home Using Public Transport Up to Eid al-Fitr 2026

The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub), through the Integrated Eid Transport Command Post 2026, recorded an 8.58 per cent increase in the number of people travelling home using public transport compared to the Eid al-Fitr holiday period in 2025. The highest number of travellers used trains. “The number of homebound travellers using public transport up to Eid day remains quite high but is still under control. The most used mode of transport is still trains,” said Head of the Bureau of Communication and Public Information Ernita Titis Dewi, as quoted by Antara on Monday (23 March 2026). Cumulatively, passenger movements via public transport from H-8 on Friday (13 March) to Eid day on Saturday (21 March) reached 10,887,584 people. This figure represents an 8.58 per cent increase compared to the 2025 Eid transport of 10,027,482 people. Here is the data on the increase in passenger numbers for each mode compared to the previous year during the Eid al-Fitr holiday period: 1. Trains: 3,349,343 people, up 13.46 per cent from 2,952,055 people; 2. Air transport: 2,397,192 people, up 2.95 per cent from 2,328,551 people; 3. Ferry transport: 2,664,004 people, up 14.01 per cent from 2,336,619 people; 4. Bus transport: 1,693,931 people, up 9.37 per cent from 1,548,874 people; and 5. Sea transport: 783,114 people. Eid Day Data On Eid day, Saturday (21 March), Kemenhub recorded passenger movements via public transport reaching 873,916 people. Based on daily data, passenger departures via public transport on Eid day for trains totalled 364,649 people, consisting of 205,335 intercity passengers and 159,314 urban regional passengers. Departures by air transport totalled 206,785 people, consisting of 155,675 domestic passengers and 51,110 international passengers. Departures by sea transport totalled 21,141 people and ferry transport 177,564 people. Meanwhile, departures by land transport (bus passengers) totalled 103,777 people. Vehicle Entry-Exit Data on Toll Roads In addition to passenger movements, vehicle flows were also monitored at several transport nodes. On Eid day, vehicles exiting the Jakarta toll gate were recorded at 193,237 units, while those entering reached 122,074 units. The total vehicle entry and exit movements at Jabodetabek toll gates were recorded at 380,753 units, and at non-Jabodetabek toll gates at 353,546 units. Vehicle Entry-Exit Data on Arterial Roads On arterial roads, vehicles exiting Jabodetabek were recorded at 601,275 units and those entering at 460,089 units. Meanwhile, vehicle movements on non-Jabodetabek arterial roads reached 607,366 units. The Ministry of Transportation urges the public to begin anticipating the return flow, expected to peak on Tuesday (24 March) or H+3 Eid. “We urge the public to plan their return journeys earlier to avoid peak times, and to consider alternative travel schedules to reduce congestion, while ensuring journeys remain safe and comfortable,” said Ernita Titis.
