1.67 Million Tonnes of Oil Bound for India Stranded in Strait of Hormuz
Moscow (ANTARA) - More than 1.67 million tonnes of crude oil, 320,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and around 200,000 tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bound for India are stranded in the Strait of Hormuz while awaiting clearance, according to Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary of India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. “1.67 million tonnes of crude oil for India, 320,000 tonnes of LPG, and around 200,000 tonnes of LNG are held up on 22 Indian-flagged vessels stuck in the Persian Gulf, waiting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz,” Kumar Sinha said, as quoted by The Times of India on Wednesday. He added that all 611 crew members on the 22 vessels are safe. On 28 February, the United States and Israel began attacking Iran, including Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran then retaliated with strikes on Israeli territory and US military bases in the Middle East. The escalation surrounding Iran has led to the suspension of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a primary route for shipping oil and liquefied natural gas from Persian Gulf countries to global markets. This traffic halt is affecting oil exports and production in the region.
