When United States President Donald Trump proclaimed America’s Liberation Day on 2 April 2025, Indonesia could only stand agape. The country failed to respond promptly, let alone anticipate the move. And little wonder — the Indonesian ambassador’s post in Washington had been vacant for nearly two years. Yet Trump had repeatedly trumpeted Liberation Day since his campaign trail.

The United States' reduced diplomatic engagement in Indonesia has created a strategic void that China is rapidly exploiting through economic coercion, propaganda dominance, and military inroads. Beijing is using infrastructure investments worth $900 billion, controlled media narratives on Taiwan, and defence partnerships to establish dependency and political loyalty, whilst American soft-power initiatives like Voice of America Indonesia have been scaled back.
