Free Software from Bill Gates
I want to know what the real purpose of Gates' visit is. He has long had a close relationship with SBY. The Prez even flew, if I am not mistaken, to Seattle (is that where Microsoft is based) to visit Gates when he went to the US after the 2004 elections. Is it as simple as Gates making contributions to Indonesia (and SBY's war chest?) for Indonesia to crack down on pirated software? Thoughts?

It was discussed with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the state palace yesterday in Jakarta. Originally, the price for the software is US$200.

Power Trading to spend 3 bln rupees on Indonesian coal mines
Mumbai (ANTARA News/Thomson Financial) - Power Trading Co. India Ltd. (PTC) plans to spend 3 billion rupees buying coal mines in Indonesia over the next year, said the Daily News and Analysis newspaper, citing PTC chairman and managing director Tantra Narayan Thakur. "We have been working on the foray for the last two years and, of late, have also identified a few prospective mines," Thakur said.

Yudhoyono calls on youths to use their brains in facing global competition

Govt plans scrapping subsidies for wealthy households
The government plans to scrap electricity subsidies for middle and upper-income households to ease pressure on the state budget. Should the House of Representatives clear the proposal, state power firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) would apply the policy in July. The policy would affect households using 2,200 watts and above. "We hope PLN will send all the data we need by next month," electricity and energy utilization head J. Purwono said Thursday.

JAKARTA - Indonesia, the world's biggest palm oil producer, plans to take firm measures aimed at ensuring palm oil firms meet stringent standards before labelling their products as eco-friendly, an industry watchdog said on Wednesday. The rapidly expanding palm oil industry in Southeast Asia has come under attack by green groups for destroying rainforests and wildlife, as well the emission of greenhouse gases.

Govt speeds up $10b Java Sumatra bridge
The government is slated to begin construction next year of the country's longest and most expensive bridge, linking Sumatra and Java islands, a year ahead of schedule. Lampung Governor Sjachroedin Z.P. said Thursday the government would start work on the 29 kilometer bridge across the Sunda strait early in a bid to boost economic activities in Sumatra. The bridge, connecting Bakauheni in Lampung with Merak in Banten, will cost about US$10 billion over the next 15 years, Sjachroedin said.

China considers buying land overseas to secure food supply
Beijing (ANTARA News/XFN-Asia) - The Chinese government may encourage domestic companies to buy farmland abroad, particularly in Africa and South America, to help guarantee food security, the Financial Times reported. Beijing has similar policies to boost offshore investment by state-owned banks, manufacturers and oil companies, but agricultural investment has been limited to a few small projects, the newspaper noted.

Indonesia losing US$16 bln per year by natural resources theft
Magelang, Central Java (ANTARA) - Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said Indonesia`s natural resources which were stolen each year reached a total value of US$16 billion. "We have been losing 16 billion dollars every year since 2004," the minister said after planting a `sawo` tree within the Military Academy complex here on Thursday.
