House Approves Investment Bill

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Despite being opposed by many groups, the House Commerce and Industry Commission approved the Investment Draft Bill to be passed into a Decree. According to several parliament members, the bill still contains many weaknesses. A member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction, Hasto Kristianto, is of the opinion that the Investment Bill compromises each faction's request.

I never said they were small --- The point i am trying to make is they are not set up to be commercially viable. They have more chance of being profitable if they stick to the local market, Singapore, Malaysia routes. If they continue to try and compete for the international long and medium haul routes they will lose money. If they lose money then the tax indonesians pay to get education and medical treatment ends up going to pay the enormous salary of a director in Garuda

How is that an insult Ella?? The simple fact is the International airline industry has over the past few years cut staffing levels by thousands in order to compete. Garuda is still a government company and therefore will never cut staffing levels. Garuda are not run as a commercial organisation so how can they be expected to compete in a highly competitive commercial market

I can't see garuda competing in the international market these days .... They are still run by a bunch of "government people" who don't posses the commercial skills needed to become a trusted airline. They have lost too many routes and Indonesia's safety record will make people think twice before using them. In their day they competed on price - unfortunately times change and they are no longer able to undercut their competition. IMHO they should stick to the local market

Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia says it will purchase 25 new Boeing 737-800 aircraft as part of its long-term business plan to upgrade its aging fleet and return the airline to profitability. Garuda Indonesia president director Emirsyah Satar said in Jakarta on Monday the first Boeing planes would be delivered in 2009, with the rest expected to arrive in stages through February 2012.

KTB launches new truck models to increase sluggish sales

PT Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian Motors (KTB), manufacturer of the country's leading commercial vehicle, the Mitsubishi Colt Diesel truck, has launched eight new product series. The company aims to boost vehicle sales to 48,000 this year from 40,000 last year. The newly released vehicles -- which boast new designs, engine specifications and safety measures -- are aimed at countering the 45 percent sales decline suffered by the company last year, KTB president director Fumio Kuwayama said Monday.

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna Tbk. has acquired the license from PT Philip Morris Products SA to produce Marlboro Filter and Marlboro Mix 9 cigarettes. “The license was the permission to produce and/or market Philip Morris cigarette products directly or indirectly in regions that have been set,” said Suartini Harintho, Sampoerna company secretary in a letter to Jakarta Stock Exchange last week.

Cocoa Exports to Exceed US$1 Billion

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Cocoa producers have stated that the value of exports this year is estimated to reach US$950 million. Head of the Indonesian Cocoa Association Halim Abdul Razak said that the growth of export this year will be between 20 percent and 30 percent. “The increase is a result of the 30 percent rise in world cocoa price last month,” said Halim last week.

President denies govt obstructs improvement of investment climate

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono denied that the government has no commitment to improve the current investment climate in the country as certain circles claimed. "I am fed up with those charges. Anybody saying that the government failed to support the business world, what government is he or she referring to?," the President said when addressing the 2007 National Leadership Meeting at the Jakarta Conventional Hall on Monday night.
