RI rowers training in Hungary JAKARTA (JP): A nine-member Indonesian canoeing and kayak team left yesterday for a four-week training stint in Budapest, Hungary as part of their preparations for the upcoming Asian Games in Hirosima, Japan in October. "We will participate in various weekly races there to improve our skills," Basoeki, the chairman of the Indonesian Rowing and Canoeing Association (PODSI) told the Jakarta Post here yesterday.

Toray to produce resin for plastic bottles JAKARTA (JP): PT Indonesia Toray Synthetics announced yesterday the establishment of a joint venture company which will build Indonesia's first polyethylene terephtalic (PET) resin for plastic bottles in Tangerang, West Java. The US$34 million plant, to be designed with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons, will meet the country's demand for PET resin, which is estimated at 20,000 tons a year.

Land agency to help banks recover bad loans JAKARTA (JP): State Minister for Agrarian Affairs Soni Harsono pledged here yesterday that he would help commercial banks recover non-performing loans in which land was used as collateral. "So far there are a lot of cases of bad loans in which debtors are using their land as collateral. However, the land has legal flaws in their certificates," Soni, who is also chairman of the National Land Agency (BPN), told reporters here yesterday.

Again, Mina tragedy The worst tragedy of any haj pilgrim occurred in 1990. More than 1,400 people were killed, including 632 Indonesians, in the pedestrian tunnel al-Muaisim, Mina, Saudi Arabia. A few days ago, a similar tragedy occurred in the same area and claimed 252 lives -- six of them being identified as Indonesians -- out of 2.5 million haj pilgrims. Whatever the fatalities, they are all our brothers and sisters who should not have been involved in such an accident.

Across the Archipelago Quake kills three in Irian JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Three people were killed by Wednesday's powerful earthquake in Apouwo village in Paniai regency, the Antara news agency said. This is the first report of casualties from the quake, which measured 5.8 on the Richter scale. A missionary who works in the remote village said the quake also destroyed a number of houses, dozens of hectares of farms and killed several cattle.
