THE RIVER'S EDGE: Residents of Bukit Duri Tanjakan, South Jakarta, take a bath, wash clothing and defecate on a floating bamboo raft in the Ciliwung River. The area residents, like many other Jakartans living in areas along the rivers in the city, say they use water from the river for their everyday necessities even though the river is heavily polluted. This is because they cannot afford to pay monthly bills for clean water provided by the City Water Company, PDAM Jaya.
