Across the Archipelago Crash survivor moving to Jakarta JAKARTA (JP): Nur Intan Fitriani, the only survivor of last month's plane crash in West Kalimantan, will be flown to Jakarta on Tuesday to undergo surgery at the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital, the Ministry of Forestry said. Intan, who is a staff member of the ministry's West Kalimantan office, has been treated at the Dr. Sudarso General Hospital in Pontianak. Her condition has significantly improved, the ministry said in a statement.

Waste imports and common sense The problem of waste imports to Indonesia from foreign countries has received a great deal of attention among certain circles. There are at least 58 containers in Tanjung Priok containing toxic waste which originated in Rotterdam. A special Dutch team came to Indonesia to examine the containers and their contents. It turns out, according to the team, that only four containers are filled with Dutch waste and belong to Dutch exporters.

Crowds from many parts of Java, Madura and Lampung spent Friday night in Demak, Central Java (above), after fighting for rice offerings carried by court officials (right) in honor of the nine wali or sunan who introduced Islam to Java. The annual Grebeg Besar celebrations are held every Idul Adha Sacrifice Day in Demak, one of the Islamic courts of ancient Java. A share of the rice offerings, fought for and stored in their homes, is said to bring good luck.

JAKARTA (JP): Share prices continued to rally on the Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX) yesterday with most issues gaining ground in moderate trading. The broad-based Composite Index closed 10.37 points higher at 498.36 from 487.99 on Friday, while the narrower-based GTDBS-50 Index rose to 117.98 from 115.40. A broker said that the JSX Index was revised with the listing of 29,755,268 common shares of Hotel Prapatan and 70 million common shares of Kabel Metal.
