The government has temporarily halted operations at 1,789 kitchens in the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme. This action was taken due to breaches of regulations and the failure to meet operational requirements.

Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan stated that the number could increase. “(The breakdown is) 1,789 suspended, SP1 (first warning letter) 368, SP2 5. Total 2,162. But this figure is still fluctuating,” Zulhas said after a meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs in Jakarta on Thursday (2/4/2026).

The MBG programme is a priority initiative of President Prabowo Subianto. Currently, there are 26,066 operational SPPG (Satuan Pelayanan Pendukung Gizi) units reaching 61,680,043 beneficiaries.

The government acknowledges shortcomings in the programme’s implementation. A total of 2,162 units have received reprimands for lack of discipline.

“But 1,789 have been suspended so they can make improvements. If they don’t, we will close them,” Zulhas said.

Head of the National Nutrition Agency Dadan Hindayana explained that some SPPG units have not yet obtained SLHS (likely a health and safety licence). Some have applied for permits, but they have not been issued within one month.

“So even if there are SPPG units that are performing very well, if the SLHS hasn’t been issued within a month, we suspend them first,” Dadan said at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs.

The government is halting operations at these kitchens temporarily until the facilities meet the requirements.

“We suspend for perhaps a week or two weeks, depending on the speed of constructing the IPAL (wastewater treatment facility),” Dadan stated.

Additionally, 62 SPPG units have violated menu provisions. This case had previously gained attention on social media.

“That’s what caused the stir on social media, so we halt them first so they can improve themselves,” Dadan said.
