Zulhas Targets Waste Processing in Bantargebang to Become Energy by 2028
Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs (Menko Pangan) Zulkifli Hasan, or Zulhas, stated that waste at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) will be converted into energy through incinerator technology. This waste-to-energy processing technology will be implemented in 2028.
“The Bantargebang one, we will resolve through waste-to-energy, a technology that already exists in the world, incinerator, it will be completed, God willing, in 2028,” Zulhas said to reporters during the Car Free Day on Jalan Rasuna Said, South Jakarta, on Sunday (10/5/2026).
Zulhas highlighted the piled-up waste at Bantargebang. The PAN Chairman noted that the height of the waste pile at Bantargebang is already like a 16-storey building.
“The one that’s been piling up, that’s been piling for 20 years. Its height is like a 16-storey building, sir,” he said.
Zulhas hopes that residents have started sorting waste at their respective homes. Thus, it is hoped that various sectors such as offices, shops, and restaurants will begin processing waste.
“I am very pleased, I appreciate and give high respect that this is pioneered by the Jakarta Governor, namely Sort Waste. That’s the key, sir. The spearhead for us is if the housing is clean,” he said.
“Because by 2029, offices must no longer dispose of waste, it must be handled in the office. Restaurants must handle it in the restaurant. Shops must handle it in the shop. Malls must handle it in the mall. But for the residents, the community, of course, it’s Sort Waste,” he added.
For information, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has committed to improvements by requiring Jakarta residents to sort waste into four categories. Pramono said the waste sorting will be enforced starting Sunday, 10 May.
“Fellows, tomorrow, the 10th, Jakarta will start the programme which officially sorts waste, and this becomes a massive movement because indeed almost 50 percent of our waste is actually organic waste,” Pramono said to reporters at the DKI City Hall, on Thursday (7/5).
