Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas) has stated that the government is targeting the resolution of 70 to 80 per cent of the national waste problem by 2029. He explained that the waste issue will be addressed through the acceleration of waste processing facility construction, managed area development, and a household waste sorting movement. “The waste problem cannot be solved by the government alone. If the government builds the technology and the public builds the habit of sorting waste from home, we can realise a cleaner, healthier, and more productive Indonesia,” Zulhas said in Jakarta on Sunday, 21 June 2026. The Coordinating Minister called on the entire community to carry out waste management reform in parallel with the government. He explained that the government is accelerating the construction of waste-to-energy processing facilities, while the public can contribute by sorting waste starting from their homes. On this occasion, he appreciated the performance of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, which is considered a real pioneer in waste sorting at the source by involving neighbourhood units (RT), community units (RW), and community groups. “The government is undertaking a major reform of waste management through the construction of Waste to Energy facilities. However, that is not enough. This reform must run in parallel with the public movement to sort waste from home. Organic waste can become fertiliser, inorganic waste can be recycled and has economic value,” Zulhas stated. The government, through the Coordinating Ministry for Food, continues to push for the acceleration of Waste to Electrical Energy Processing Facilities (PSEL) development in several priority locations, in accordance with the mandate of Presidential Regulation Number 109 of 2025. To date, there are around 30 planned PSEL locations to be developed over the next few years, using an urban/agglomeration area approach for regions producing over 1,000 tonnes of waste per day. In the near future, groundbreaking will be carried out at three PSEL locations, followed by 12 locations currently being processed by Danantara Indonesia to enter the partner selection phase with a target to operate by 2028.
