Zulhas Says Waste Could Become a Hot Commodity When Jakarta's Incinerator Operates
Industry Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan stated this during the Launch of Jakarta’s 499th Anniversary, combined with the Keep Jakarta Clean: Waste Sorting Movement event in the Pedestrian area of Jalan HR Rasuna Said, in front of Plaza Festival, Jakarta (10/5). “The waste that is our enemy will be turned into electricity. Earlier, I spoke with the Governor; when the incinerator is running in 2027-2028, waste could become something people fight over, ma’am. Because the fuel, waste, will go into the incinerator and be processed into electricity,” said Luhut in his speech at the ‘Launch of DKI’s 499th Anniversary’ event on Sunday (10/5/2026). Appreciation for the Waste Sorting Movement Luhut also expressed appreciation for the waste sorting movement initiated by DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung. According to him, waste sorting is one of the main keys to solving urban waste issues. “I’m very pleased, I appreciate and give high respect to this, because it’s pioneered by the Jakarta Governor, namely Waste Sorting. That’s our main problem. Our primary problem,” said Luhut. He emphasised that waste management must start from the source, especially from households. In addition, Luhut mentioned that every sector going forward also needs to take responsibility for solving their respective waste issues. “Because by 2029, offices will no longer be allowed to dispose of waste there; it must be handled in the office. Restaurants must handle it in the restaurant. Shops in the shop. Malls in the mall. But for the residents, the community, of course, it’s Waste Sorting,” he added. For information, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government held the Launch of Jakarta’s 499th Anniversary towards five centuries. The event took place in the Pedestrian area of Jalan HR Rasuna Said, in front of Plaza Festival, on Saturday-Sunday, 9-10 May 2026. The activity was enlivened with the Keep Jakarta Clean: Waste Sorting Movement campaign. The event was attended by DKI Jakarta Provincial Government officials, central government, ambassadors, communities, business actors, and the general public as a form of collaboration towards a Global Jakarta City. Residents Asked to Sort Waste into 4 Categories DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung previously said that the DKI Provincial Government will officially start the waste sorting programme on Sunday, 10 May 2026. Jakarta residents are required to sort waste into four categories, namely organic, inorganic, B3, and residue. “Colleagues, tomorrow on the 10th, Jakarta will start the official waste sorting programme, and this will be a massive movement because almost 50 percent of our waste is actually organic waste,” said Pramono to reporters at City Hall on Thursday (7/5).
