Zuckerberg Suddenly Moves Desk and Becomes a Programmer Again
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is evidently serious about the global artificial intelligence (AI) race. So ambitious is he that the Facebook founder is willing to “come down from the mountain,” leaving his executive desk and relocating his workspace to directly join in coding with AI researchers. This unusual manoeuvre is certainly an irony in itself. After all, as experts proclaim that coding is becoming an obsolete skill due to AI, Zuckerberg is returning to being a programmer. Zuckerberg has reportedly rearranged and permanently moved his desk to Meta’s artificial intelligence lab facility. There, he now sits side by side with the company’s key AI development figures, namely Meta AI head Alexandr Wang and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman. “Mark has really moved his desk. He now sits in the AI lab with Alex Wang and Nat Friedman, and he writes code all day,” revealed McCormick. Of course, the sudden involvement of the “big boss” in the technical research space could spark awkwardness. McCormick even joked, imagining himself as an AI research team employee. “On one hand, they (the researchers) might feel, ‘Oh great, there’s more input from you, Mark, while you’re coding along’,” said McCormick, as compiled by KompasTekno from BusinessInsider. Although it sounds like micro-management, McCormick emphasised that the move represents Zuckerberg’s extremely high personal commitment. According to him, Zuckerberg wants to thoroughly understand all the intricacies and technical hurdles to build the most advanced AI language model. Meta was indeed once ridiculed for being slow to heat up and falling behind at the starting line of the generative AI race. To catch up on that lag, Meta recently carried out a massive restructuring by forming the Superintelligence Labs division. This step is key for Meta to bring in Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang to lead the new division alongside Nat Friedman, who joined earlier. By positioning himself directly in that innovation kitchen, Zuckerberg hopes Meta will not just be a follower but can soon seize the throne as the AI king in Silicon Valley.
