Zoom partners with World for meeting participant verification to prevent deepfakes
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The online conferencing platform Zoom has announced a collaboration with World, a human identity verification technology developer owned by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, to ensure that virtual meeting participants are truly human and not artificial intelligence (AI) disguising itself.
This partnership comes amid rising threats of fraud using deepfake technology in video calls.
As reported by TechCrunch on Saturday, one major case occurred in early 2024 when engineering firm Arup lost 25 million US dollars after an employee in Hong Kong approved a series of fund transfers in a video meeting that appeared to include the chief financial officer and several colleagues. All meeting participants, except the victim, turned out to be AI deepfakes.
A similar case was reported to have affected a multinational company in Singapore in 2025. According to several cybersecurity industry reports, losses from deepfake fraud exceeded 200 million US dollars in just the first quarter of last year. The average loss per corporate incident is now said to exceed 500,000 US dollars.
Zoom and World assess that current deepfake detection methods are still limited because they only analyse video frames for signs of AI manipulation.
The system will match images taken during user registration via World’s Orb device, live facial scans from the user’s device, and the live video display seen by other meeting participants. If all three match, the participant will receive a “Verified Human” badge on their meeting profile.
Zoom states that hosts or meeting organisers can activate a dedicated verification waiting room, requiring all participants to undergo identification before entering the meeting. Participants can also request identity verification for other attendees during an ongoing meeting.
“This integration is part of Zoom’s open ecosystem approach, which gives customers more ways to build trust in their workflows according to the needs and most important uses for each party,” said Zoom spokesperson Travis Isaman.
In addition to Zoom, World has partnered with several other consumer platforms such as Tinder and Visa for human verification services.
