Zohran Mamdani Curious About Jakarta's Traffic Solutions; Pramono Showcases Transjabodetabek

New York Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani expressed interest in how Jakarta manages its traffic congestion. This was discussed during a meeting between Mamdani and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung at Civic Hall, New York.

During the meeting, Mamdani inquired about Jakarta’s strategies for handling congestion and developing public transportation. Pramono explained the development of Transjabodetabek as one of the efforts to strengthen Jakarta’s connectivity with its surrounding satellite cities.

Pramono stated that the mobility of residents from these satellite regions remains one of Jakarta’s primary challenges. Every day, more than 4 million people enter and exit Jakarta, particularly during peak hours.

“Every day, more than four million people enter and exit Jakarta, especially during rush hour. Through Transjabodetabek, we aim to reduce congestion and the volume of vehicles entering Jakarta while simultaneously strengthening regional connectivity,” Pramono said in a statement on Monday (21/09/2026).

According to him, the development of public transport is not only aimed at serving the mobility of residents within Jakarta. Connectivity with surrounding areas is also being strengthened to reduce the use of private vehicles.

Pramono also explained the Jakarta Provincial Government’s policies to encourage the public to use public transport. One such measure is the provision of free public transport services for 15 specific groups of people.

These free services are provided to the elderly, persons with disabilities, students receiving the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP), and university students receiving the Jakarta Superior Student Card (KJmu).

“We also provide free public transport services for 15 groups of people, including the elderly, people with disabilities, as well as KJP students and KJMU students,” he said.

In addition to transportation, the meeting between Pramono and Mamdani also addressed several other urban challenges, such as flooding, air pollution, and development financing through regional bonds.

Regarding flood issues, Pramono outlined the construction of flood control infrastructure, the reduction of groundwater usage to curb land subsidence, and the development of the Giant Sea Wall.
