The aid ships bound for Gaza residents were reported to be surrounded by Israeli warships and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). In a statement quoted by Anadolu news agency, the action participants revealed that their communication systems were beginning to fail due to deliberate signal jamming. This disruption occurred as the flotilla was sailing in the Mediterranean Sea towards the blockaded Gaza Strip. An emergency message shared by the flotilla side described the situation as an “ongoing attack.” One ship was reported to be aggressively approached by an Israeli warship, while most other ships lost communication access due to signal interference. Military operation in international waters Israeli military sources confirmed that their navy had begun an operation to take control of the flotilla. According to a report from Israel Defense Forces Radio, the decision to intercept was made when the flotilla’s position was still hundreds of kilometres from Israel’s coastline. The interception was monitored in international waters near the island of Crete, Greece. The large scale of the flotilla—estimated at 100 ships carrying around 1,000 activists from various countries—became the reason for the Israeli military to take preventive action further out at sea. The latest reports indicate that Israeli forces have successfully taken control of several ships. The seized ships are planned to be forcibly towed to Ashdod port in Israeli-occupied territory.
