Zelenskyy: Russian Skies No Longer Safe from Ukrainian Drones
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a warning to all global airlines and insurance companies regarding the high risks of traversing Russian airspace. Kyiv has asserted that the skies over Russian territory will be filled with Ukrainian military drones for the duration of the conflict.
“Russian airspace has become very unsafe. We are not targeting civilian flights, but the volume of drone presence in Russian skies will be on a massive scale that airlines must account for in their risk assessments,” Zelenskyly stated. In response to this warning, Russian President Vladimir Putin has levelled accusations, claiming that Ukraine’s statement constitutes a form of state terrorism.
Escalations in land and air attacks continue to increase significantly:
Attacks on the Ukrainian Railway Network: Russian ballistic missile strikes hit a locomotive depot in Kyiv, killing at least six employees of the Ukrzaliznytsia railway company. A total of 12 civilians died in a series of bombings in the capital region and its surroundings.
Damage to Russian Oil Refineries: Ukrainian Military Intelligence (GUR) confirmed a successful strike against the Novatek Ust-Luga oil processing unit in the Leningrad region, which triggered a massive fire.
Attacks on Odesa Ports: Russian forces damaged Black Sea export facilities and Naftogaz installations in Odesa, and claimed to have struck two cargo ships at the Pivdennyi Port.
Russia’s war economy sector is reported to be under heavy pressure. Russia’s Envoy for International Development, Boris Titov, warned that the nation’s economy is in ‘berserk mode’, which can only be sustained in the short term. This critical stance follows the dismissal of the Chief Economist of the State Development Bank of Russia, Andrei Klepach, who had previously highlighted the fragility of the national economy due to the war.
On the international stage, the German Government has officially accused Russian agents of involvement in a drone attack incident against a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig Airport.
In a strict response, Berlin has decided to cease the operations of the Russian Consulate in Bonn, evacuate the Russian House facilities, and tighten surveillance of the ‘shadow fleet’ and border controls for Russian citizens. Meanwhile, the presence of the Russian delegation at the G20 forum in the United States continues to trigger rejection and diplomatic tension from G7 member states.
