Zayed Airport in Abu Dhabi remains closed with strict access restrictions
Abu Dhabi – Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi remains closed following heightened security tensions in the Middle East, which have resulted in the closure of airspace and cancellation of numerous flights.
When ANTARA attempted to approach the airport to directly enquire about flight status from Etihad Airways, access to the airport area in Abu Dhabi on Sunday afternoon (1 March) local time remained strictly restricted. Security personnel prohibited anyone, including prospective passengers holding valid flight tickets, from entering the terminal area. Multiple government vehicles were stationed and blocking the main access road to the airport.
No prospective passengers were permitted to enter either the departure or arrival areas. The situation surrounding the airport gates could not be monitored from outside, though security measures were clearly intensified to prevent any movement that could potentially threaten public safety.
The airport closure followed escalating security tensions in the Middle East, which triggered temporary airspace closures in several regional countries. Civil aviation authorities took preventative measures by halting airport operations and cancelling flights to prioritise passenger and aircraft crew safety.
Multiple airlines, including Etihad Airways based in Abu Dhabi, have announced flight suspensions until further notice whilst awaiting confirmation from relevant authorities that security conditions are conducive. Airlines have urged prospective passengers not to travel to the airport and to monitor official information through company websites and official communication channels. Passengers have been advised to utilise online flight rebooking or refund services.
As of the time this report was filed, there was no confirmation regarding when flight operations would return to normal. Local authorities stated they would continue monitoring the situation and ensure all measures prioritise public safety and security.
