Zamzam Water Being Sold at Tanah Abang Market Claimed to Be Authentic from Makkah
Zamzam water proves popular not only during the Hajj season but also throughout Ramadan, when demand for the sacred water reaches considerable levels in Indonesia. This sustained interest stems from the spiritual properties of Zamzam water that are widely believed by Muslims across the nation.
The vendors at Tanah Abang Market offer Zamzam water at varying price points, ranging from Rp125,000 for twenty 50ml bottles up to Rp500,000 for 5-litre containers. Traders claim that the Zamzam water they sell is brought directly from Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
Authentic Zamzam water is packaged in cardboard boxes bearing Arabic inscriptions. The packaging also displays boarding passes from airport terminals, whilst the gallon containers inside remain sealed and unopened.
According to several vendors at Tanah Abang Market, their Zamzam water is sourced through umrah pilgrims, importers, or flight attendants. One trader, Riadi, explained that Zamzam water is typically brought by umrah pilgrims, although there are restrictions on the quantities permitted when transporting the water.
Some vendors obtain their supplies from importers. Consequently, the price of Zamzam water remains relatively high, with 5-litre gallon containers commanding prices of around Rp500,000.
