Payment Schedule for Zakat Fitrah

Zakat fitrah may be paid from the beginning of Ramadan and must be settled no later than before the Eid al-Fitr prayer is performed. Meanwhile, the distribution of zakat fitrah to eligible recipients (mustahik) must be completed no later than before the Eid al-Fitr prayer, specifically before the preacher ascends the pulpit.

Zakat fitrah (zakat al-fitr) is a form of zakat obligatory upon every Muslim soul, both male and female, which is fulfilled during the month of Ramadan and completed before Eid al-Fitr. The obligation of zakat fitrah is based on the hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him):

“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) made zakat fitrah obligatory — one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of wheat — upon every Muslim, whether slave or free, male or female, young or old. He commanded that it be fulfilled before the people go out for the prayer.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

Zakat fitrah is obligatory for every soul, provided they profess Islam, are alive during the month of Ramadan, and possess surplus provisions or basic necessities for the night and day of Eid al-Fitr. The amount is 2.5 kg or 3.5 litres of rice or staple food per person.
