Zakat Fitrah 2026: Breakdown of Zakat Fitrah in Rice and Rupiah
Approaching the end of Ramadan 1447 H, the National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) of the Republic of Indonesia has officially released guidance regarding the amount of zakat fitrah for 2026. This determination serves as a reference for all Muslims in Indonesia to ensure that their religious obligations are fulfilled in accordance with Islamic law and administrative requirements.
Based on BAZNAS Chairman Decree No. 14 of 2026, the measure of zakat fitrah in the form of rice or staple food is 2.5 kilogrammes or 3.5 litres per person. This standard follows the 1 sha’ measurement that has been in use since the time of the Prophet Muhammad.
Religious scholars have reminded that the quality of rice given must not be lower than the quality of rice consumed daily. If one consumes premium rice, then the zakat issued must also be of premium quality.
To provide convenience for zakat payers (muzaki), BAZNAS has established a conversion of zakat fitrah into Indonesian Rupiah. For 2026, the amount set nationally is Rp50,000 per person.
The most preferred time is on the morning of Eid al-Fitr, after dawn but before the Eid prayer begins. However, payment may already be made from the beginning of Ramadan to facilitate distribution to those in need.
Payment can be made through Zakat Collection Units (UPZ) in mosques, official zakat institutions (LAZ), or through legitimate BAZNAS digital platforms to ensure transparency in distribution.
Zakat fitrah is only obligatory for Muslims who are alive (experiencing part of Ramadan and part of Shawwal). If someone passes away before sunset on the last day of Ramadan, then zakat fitrah is not required for them.
