Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has obtained information regarding the whereabouts of Muhammad Riza Chalid. Riza is an Indonesian businessman who is now a suspect in a corruption case involving oil governance.

Currently, Riza is a fugitive and listed on the wanted persons list (DPO). “What we hear (Riza) is in Malaysia,” said Yusril at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday, 10 April 2026.

Yusril stated that the Indonesian government needs to request extradition from Malaysia if Riza is indeed in the neighbouring country. However, Yusril conveyed that the information about Riza’s whereabouts still needs to be thoroughly investigated. “Whether it is certain or not (that Riza is in Malaysia) must be investigated,” said Yusril.

Yusril said he is not directly handling the Riza Chalid case. He stated that the matter of searching for Riza will be managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Law.

According to Yusril, the Indonesian government has not yet requested efforts to repatriate Riza Chalid from abroad. “Up to now, no repatriation efforts have been made, either in the context of MLA (mutual legal assistance) or extradition with the Malaysian government,” said the former general chairman of the Crescent Star Party.

The alleged corruption case implicating Riza Chalid is being handled by the Attorney General’s Office. Riza is a suspect in the alleged corruption case of crude oil procurement and refinery products at Pertamina Energy Trading Limited (Petral). Riza Chalid, who is abroad, is now on the Attorney General’s DPO list.

Director of Investigations of the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) of the Attorney General’s Office, Syarief Sulaeman Nahdi, said that they are pursuing Riza through cooperation with international authorities, including Interpol.

“We continue to communicate with relevant parties, both through NCB Interpol and several countries that we suspect are his location,” said Syarief in a press conference at the Attorney General’s Office, South Jakarta, on Thursday, 9 April 2026.

Syarief explained that the Attorney General’s Office has pursued the red notice mechanism to expedite the arrest process. He acknowledged that law enforcement against suspects outside Indonesia’s jurisdiction faces several obstacles. Nevertheless, the Attorney General’s Office ensures that various legal efforts have been made to the maximum extent.

The Attorney General’s Office hopes to soon bring Riza Chalid to Indonesia to undergo legal proceedings. Syarief stated that the process requires time because it involves the jurisdiction of other countries.
