Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra has called on the nation’s next generation to continue strengthening Indonesia’s sovereignty while building public prosperity.

Speaking in Jakarta on Monday, Yusril said the next generation needs to develop the economy and social life, as well as improve mastery of science and technology, while retaining a sensitive conscience.

“In this way, we become a nation that is not only socially prosperous, but also economically affluent and united from Sabang to Merauke without any division whatsoever,” he said.

In the momentum of the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence, Yusril invited the public to be grateful for the independence fought for by the nation’s founders through various means, from physical struggle to diplomacy and international politics.

According to him, Indonesia’s 81-year journey should serve as a reminder for the next generation to continue the struggle of the nation’s founders.

Yusril also remembered the figures and independence fighters who have passed away and invited the public to pray for them.

He said Indonesia must not be complacent in facing various threats and challenges, and must continue to build its capacity to compete with other nations.

“Happy 81st anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Long live the Republic of Indonesia, Merdeka!” he said.

Yusril also touched on Indonesia’s diplomatic journey after the Proclamation of 17 August 1945 until the recognition of sovereignty by the Netherlands on 27 December 1949.

This year’s 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence carries the theme “Indonesia Berdaulat, Adil, dan Makmur” (A Sovereign, Just and Prosperous Indonesia).

President Prabowo Subianto led the flag-lowering ceremony for the Red and White at the Merdeka Palace courtyard in Jakarta on Monday afternoon, as part of the series of events marking the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence.
