Yusril Targets Completion of Election Bill Within 2.5 Years of Prabowo's Administration
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services Yusril Ihza Mahendra targets the revision of the Election Law (RUU Pemilu) to be completed no later than 2.5 years into President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
Yusril stated that this target is to provide adequate preparation time ahead of the 2029 elections.
“But our actual target is for this RUU (Election Law) to be completed at the 2.5-year mark of this administration, so there is sufficient lead time to prepare for the elections 2.5 years before they are held in 2029,” said Yusril after the National Law Development Coordination Meeting at the Gran Melia Hotel, Jakarta, on Wednesday (22/4/2026).
Therefore, Yusril hopes that discussions on the RUU Pemilu will begin with the DPR by mid-year.
He said that if the DPR has prepared a draft of the RUU Pemilu, President Prabowo will certainly appoint several ministers to discuss the bill.
“Hopefully, discussions can start by mid-year. That depends on the DPR,” he stated.
He added that the draft of the RUU is nearly final.
“So we are in the stage of anticipating the draft to be discussed in the DPR and will then submit a counter-draft from the government,” said Yusril.
Previously, DPR Chair Puan Maharani stated that her side does not discuss the revision of the Election Law (RUU Pemilu) secretly or behind closed doors.
However, Puan acknowledged that communication among political parties regarding the RUU Pemilu continues.
“Regarding the RUU Pemilu, there is indeed a time limit. And we continue to conduct political communications among the political parties, and this is not done secretly,” said Puan at the DPR Building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/4/2026).
“Communication can be formal or informal. But political communication is always ongoing,” she added.
According to Puan, the most important thing is to ensure that future elections run honestly and fairly.
“And proceed well, with the spirit of democracy not harming the nation and state,” she emphasised.
