Yusril Recalls Preparing Speech Texts for Try Sutrisno During His Vice-Presidential Tenure

JAKARTA — Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra has recalled shared moments with Indonesia’s sixth Vice President Try Sutrisno from the past.

Yusril recounted that he frequently prepared speech texts for Try Sutrisno during his tenure as Vice President. At that time, Yusril worked at the State Secretariat.

“My family and I are deeply saddened by the death of Pak Try Sutrisno. I have known him since he became Jaya Military Commander in 1983. I joined the State Secretariat in 1993, when Pak Try had just become Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia,” Yusril told Kompas.com on Monday (2 March 2026).

Yusril stated that whilst working at the State Secretariat, he occasionally met Try Sutrisno. Yusril testified that Try Sutrisno was a very kind and friendly person.

“And he valued us young people at that time,” said Yusril.

According to Yusril, he frequently met Try Sutrisno on several occasions, particularly whilst serving as State Secretary during the tenure of sixth President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).

“My impression is that he was a sincere person of firm conviction. His life was simple. I visited his house in Menteng several times. He always received me with warmth and kindness,” added Yusril.
