The Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has emphasised that, to date, there have been no directives or discussions concerning the granting of amnesty to the former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Anwar Makarim.

Yusril stated that the government respects the ongoing legal process and has not yet received any proposals regarding the granting of amnesty to Nadiem.

“There have been no discussions or proposals whatsoever. Regarding amnesty, abolition, and rehabilitation, these are entirely the prerogative of the President,” Yusril said when met in Depok, West Java, on Thursday.

He made the statement in response to questions regarding the possibility of President Prabowo Subianto granting amnesty to Nadiem, following the previous granting of abolition to the former Minister of Trade, Thomas Trikasih Lembong.

He noted that during the trial, both prosecutors and the legal defence team have been afforded equal opportunities to present evidence and witnesses to prove their respective arguments before the panel of judges.

“The prosecution side has not made much effort to build public opinion. Meanwhile, from Nadiem’s side, many opinions are being formed through social media and the mass media,” Yusril remarked.

Previously, Nadiem was sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with the corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) within the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the 2019–2022 period.

The panel of judges also stated that his actions resulted in state financial losses amounting to Rp1.56 trillion.
