Because of this, it truly requires serious restructuring and internal improvements.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has stated that the coordination of technical ministries under his authority is on track during the second year of the administration.

Over these two years, he noted, significant progress has been made by the three technical ministries under his purview: the Ministry of Law, the Ministry of Human Rights, and the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs.

“Although occasionally sectoral issues still arise in the field, where departments still feel ‘this is my authority’,” Yusril said during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.

To address this, Yusril will soon hold coordination meetings with the technical ministers under his supervision to harmonise policies and discuss existing problems.

He mentioned one of the pressing recent issues, namely the complex challenges facing correctional institutions (prisons).

This is because, he noted, prison matters involve many parties, ranging from the Prosecutor’s Office to the Courts, and also involve issues related to human rights and education.

“Therefore, it truly requires serious restructuring and internal improvements,” he said.

He did not deny that when discussing crime, the root cause ultimately returns to the level of public welfare; if the population continues to have low incomes, the tendency to commit crimes remains high.

Consequently, he believes that if public welfare in Indonesia is not improved, no matter how many prisons are built, they will never be able to accommodate all inmates.
