Yusril Calls Film Title "Pesta Babi" Provocative: Director Explains Its Meaning?
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, considers the title of the documentary film “Pesta Babi: Kolonialisme di Zaman Kita” to contain provocative and controversial narratives.
However, Yusril explained that the documentary critiques the National Strategic Project (PSN) in South Papua, which is seen as disrupting environmental conservation, the customary rights of Papuan communities, and the living environment. For him, such criticism is reasonable.
“I consider such criticism perfectly normal, even though it does contain provocative narratives. The title of the documentary itself is indeed controversial. ‘Pesta Babi: Kolonialisme di Zaman Kita’ appears to be provocative,” Yusril stated in his remarks on Thursday, 14 May 2026.
Previously, Yusril affirmed that neither the government nor central law enforcement authorities have issued any directives or policies banning the screening or watch parties (nobar) for the documentary “Pesta Babi: Kolonialisme di Zaman Kita”.
Even some campuses in the regions have been able to hold watch parties for the film without any obstacles.
Nevertheless, Yusril reminded the public not to be provoked merely by the film’s title, which he believes was deliberately crafted to attract public attention.
“But of course, people should not be provoked and react solely because of a provocative title that the producers may have intentionally created to draw attention. Let the public watch it, and afterwards, feel free to hold discussions and debates. In this way, the public becomes critical, and pro and con views can emerge,” he said.
According to Yusril, the government can also learn lessons from the criticisms conveyed through the film, including evaluating any on-the-ground steps that need improvement.
“Pesta Babi” Provocative and Subject to Various Interpretations
Yusril also highlighted the use of the term “Pesta Babi” in the film’s title, which he believes could give rise to various interpretations within society. “The term ‘Pesta Babi’ indeed has the potential to spark a variety of interpretations. Therefore, it would be better if the screenwriter, director, and producer also explain the meaning of those words,” he said.
He stressed that openness is not only demanded from the Government, but also from artists and creators of artistic works, including films.
