Yusril Affirms Police Under President, No Ministry of Police to be Established

JAKARTA - A member of the Police Reform Acceleration Commission, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has stated that there is no recommendation regarding the establishment of a Ministry of Police. He firmly asserted that Polri is an institution directly under the President of the Republic of Indonesia. He also emphasised that Polri will not be under any ministry and is directly accountable to the President. “The position of Polri remains as it is now. Polri is directly under the President and no Ministry of Security or Ministry of Police will be established,” Yusril said during a press conference at the Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026). “There is a 3,000-page report, a 300-page one, and some that are only 3 pages. So it can be read by the President in a concise manner, allowing him to understand well the proposals submitted by the Police Reform Acceleration Commission to the President,” Yusril explained. One of the commission’s recommendations is the strengthening of the National Police Commission’s (Kompolnas) authority. “The important point is the existence of Kompolnas whose authority is expanded, and the decisions of Kompolnas are binding so they must be implemented by the Police Chief,” Yusril said. On the same occasion, Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that the Bhayangkara Corps welcomes all proposals from the Police Reform Acceleration Commission. “In principle, Polri welcomes the recommendations from the Police Reform Commission and will follow them up immediately,” Listyo said. “The strengthening of Kompolnas will certainly be part of what we will implement soon. Placement outside the structure, we will soon discuss with the Minister of Law,” Listyo added. “And earlier, regarding governance issues, we have already prepared which ones fall into short-term, medium-term, and long-term grand strategies,” he continued.
